Fiesta(s) in Southern New Mexico

Labor Day weekend kicks off fall festival season in Southern New Mexico. From wine tasting, to chile tasting, to arts and crafts and parades, there is something for everyone.  Most of the events last all weekend so there is plenty of time to make the rounds and see, smell, taste all the local flavor.

Happening this weekend:

38th Annual Hatch Chile Festival

New Mexico Harvest Wine Festival

Rolling Stones 27th Annual Gem and Mineral Show

Hillsboro Harvest and Heritage Music Festivals

20th Annual Cottonwood Festival

Cloudcroft Labor Day Fiesta

7th Annual Bottomless Bubblefest

On October 2 a new exhibit will open at Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the new Resnick Exhibition Pavilion entitled Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915.  Pulled from their collection of more than 1,000 pieces, selections will include silk embroidered stockings, French Revolution propaganda menswear, and a Paul Poiret designed evening outfit.  Most of the collection was acquired in 2007 by museum director Michael Govan and the exhibit is being curated by Sharon Takeda and Kaye Spilker.

This promises to be a ground breaking exhibit featuring the handcrafted, one of a kind clothing of the European aristocracy and the evolution it went through during this 200-year span.  The details on these items are a representation of the best of the best in tailoring, hand work, and construction.  The exhibition catalog will have a pre-face by John Galliano and will hopefully be sold in the LACMA Shop for those of us who might not be able to make it to L.A. but don't want to miss this.

Update to the Races

Although it really was quite entertaining to watch the ducks race, for some reason I don't think they were enjoying themselves very much!

Salsa!

Main Street Salsa Fest

Today is the annual Las Cruces Salsafest! Besides salsa tasting and judging, there are food vendors, craft vendors and good music.  I will be tasting and voting and probably shopping! Hopefully lots of people will come out for this community event.

Weekend at the Races

This weekend is the annual Great American Duck Race in Deming (here).  I am planning on being there and hopefully winning a race! The ducks are $5 and you have to yell and clap and do anything you can to get your duck down the chute and to the finish line first.  There are also wet and dry races, I'll be participating in both.  The theme this year, obviously, is pirates so there may be some costumes involved, we shall see...
